How to install Open VPN on IP COP firewall

August 14, 2006 in Internet access, Linux, VPN

When my combined router/webserver crashed I decided to build a dedicated firewall with DMZ capabilities. IP COP which is an open Source Linux based firewall seemed to fulfill my needs and was chosen. IP COP works flawlessly, but I want to try an OPEN VPN solution and this is not supported natively in IP COP.
I have found this how2 describing how to install and configure Open VPN on IP COP. It describes using the Zerina OpenVPN extension for IPCop based firewalls.

Information needed when ordering a DSL for interdepartment VPN communication

June 22, 2006 in Internet access, VPN

This article is based on my own experiences of what is needed to get a DSL access with the correct technical spesifications and needed information of where the ISP must install the DSL.

Installation adress as precise as possible

  • Street adress
  • Entrance number (if there is one)
  • Floor
  • Room
  • A telephone number at the site (often needed by the internet provider to precisely locate the adress)

Technical information
Two public IP-addresses in a /30 subnet (mask 255.255.255.252). This is based on my company where we uses Cisco VPN equipment

  • 1 IP adress for NAT/IPSec
  • 1 IP adress for the default gateway to the ISP

Support information needed for supporting the new site

The internet provider must supply this information.

  • Name of the internet provider
  • Reference number of the ADSL-line
  • Documentation of the Service Level Agreement of the ADSL connection (uptime of connection, response time for support, etc)
  • Support email address
  • Support phone number

This should ensure that you get the part of the DSL line correct. The next step is to configure the VPN router correctly. That is a whole different matter and npt subject of this article.
