June 26, 2006 in Telephony, VOIP

This is a note for myself. Remember to listen to this podcast regarding VOIP and opinions for and against.

An extract:

“During this 16-minute podcast, TechRepublic technical director George Ou and section editor Bill Detwiler explore business cases for and against VoIP. VoIP can no longer be dismissed as a passing fad. But it still has a long way to go before people see it as a true replacement for their public-switched telephones. Despite the promise of cost savings, increased productivity and a slew of new features, many businesses have yet to deploy the technology. During this 16-minute podcast, TechRepublic technical director George Ou and section editor Bill Detwiler explore business cases for and against VoIP. They also examine the various VoIP deployment options and important considerations. George is a former IT consultant specializing in switches, routers, wireless LAN and IT infrastructure and architecture.”

Microstock photo agencies sells photos for prices between $1USD and $10USD. The price is split between agencie and photographer. Buyers are businesses, papers, private persons, etc.

Whats interesting about Microstock agencies is that amateurs can contribute photos for sale. You dont have to be a professional photographer with expensive professional equipment.

Two such agencies are:

There are also more professional agencies thats possible to sell your pictures to, but the quality demands on equipment makes you need 12 MP cameras and better. Not the cheapest gear, thats for sure.

Information needed when ordering a DSL for interdepartment VPN communication

June 22, 2006 in Internet access, VPN

This article is based on my own experiences of what is needed to get a DSL access with the correct technical spesifications and needed information of where the ISP must install the DSL.

Installation adress as precise as possible

  • Street adress
  • Entrance number (if there is one)
  • Floor
  • Room
  • A telephone number at the site (often needed by the internet provider to precisely locate the adress)

Technical information
Two public IP-addresses in a /30 subnet (mask 255.255.255.252). This is based on my company where we uses Cisco VPN equipment

  • 1 IP adress for NAT/IPSec
  • 1 IP adress for the default gateway to the ISP

Support information needed for supporting the new site

The internet provider must supply this information.

  • Name of the internet provider
  • Reference number of the ADSL-line
  • Documentation of the Service Level Agreement of the ADSL connection (uptime of connection, response time for support, etc)
  • Support email address
  • Support phone number

This should ensure that you get the part of the DSL line correct. The next step is to configure the VPN router correctly. That is a whole different matter and npt subject of this article.

GBPVR PC based video recorder and getting TV-lisings using the excellent O2grabber software

June 20, 2006 in PVR

Currently O2Grabber has stopped working with norwegian channel information. There seems to be a workaround that fools O2grabber to download the correct channelinformation.
The sollution can be found at the following website: http://o2grabber.o2design.se/index.asp?page=faq

In short you need to add the following line to your “hosts” file placed in the folder “c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts:

212.112.161.59 ntb.dagenstv.com

Its easy to edit it with Notepad.

You also need to input the IP-adress in the Proxy settings in the configuration menu in O2grabber. Screenshot below.

iTerm – Terminal software for OSX

June 20, 2006 in Apple, OSX

iTerm
iTerm is an open source terminal program for OSX with extended features over OSX’s own terminal program. What I miss most with OSX own terminal is the posibility to use a tabbed interface. The fact that it’s extremely slow to start ssh sessions doesnt help mutch.
iTerm seems to solve these two problems.
